Sworn Law Enforcement Officer Information
The Edwardsville Police Department is organized under the laws of the State of Illinois and the City of Edwardsville. Commissioned personnel are hired through the Southwestern Illinois Joint Fire and Police Recruitment and Testing Consortium. Sergeants and patrol officers of the Edwardsville Police Department are members of and represented by the Fraternal Order of Police.
The Edwardsville Police Department periodically conducts examinations for law enforcement applicants who are subsequently placed on a roster in their relative order of excellence. When a vacancy is created (either by retirement, termination, or an increase in the authorized size of the force) the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners appoints the necessary personnel, who will be directed to report to the Director of Police for assignment. Testing dates will be posted on the city website and Facebook pages when available.
The starting pay for a probationary patrol officer is $68,381.04 for the first twelve months. “Probation” lasts for a period of eighteen months. Furthermore, the officer must pass a basic training course (at least twelve weeks in duration) at an approved training academy. The municipality pays costs of the schooling. The salary for the last six months of probation is equal to $76,003.20 per year.
A non-probationary patrol officer receives a base pay of $76,003.20 per year. Sergeants are paid an annual base salary of $83,559.84 per year. Annual longevity benefits range from $2,280.10 to $8,692.32 and graduate after four years, nine years, fourteen years, nineteen and twenty-four years of service, depending upon attained rank. An additional $1,000 per year is paid to those persons who hold a baccalaureate degree. An annual $600 or $1,250 clothing/cleaning allowance is available to uniformed and plain clothes personnel, respectively. Salaries, benefits, and job requirements are subject to change effective May 1, 2019, per Fraternal Order of Police Contract.
