Bench Dedicated in Downtown Edwardsville to Marvin 'Preach' Webb

Marvin "Preach" Webb

City officials were joined by family and friends of Marvin “Preach” Webb on Friday, August 5, 2022, to dedicate a bench and plaque inscribed in honor of Edwardsville’s beloved goodwill ambassador, who died in June at the age of 86.

The bench sits on the sidewalk along North Main Street, outside the Madison County Administration Building. It’s near the Preach on Main Plaque that was installed in January 2021 through the efforts of friends and supporters.

Preach, as Mr. Webb was known, was a friendly, familiar presence in Edwardsville for decades, particularly in and around downtown and at area businesses. He was quick with a smile, a hello and a helping hand, and equally at home on stage and at sporting events.

“Adequately describing what Preach meant to this City is a monumental task,” Mayor Art Risavy said. “He was a thoughtful and engaging friend to residents and businesses alike. He was our goodwill ambassador, representing us in the kindest, helpful and most caring ways in his 86 years on this Earth.”

Mr. Webb’s niece, Antonia Webb, and nephew, Shannon Hudson, both of Edwardsville, attended the event and shared recollections of their uncle. Antonia Webb said the outpouring of love from the community “is wonderful; it’s beautiful.”

Others in attendance included current and former City officials and aldermen and representatives of the Police Department, the Edwardsville Community Foundation, The Wildey Theatre, Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce and the Preach on Main Project.

The bench joins several other tributes to Mr. Webb, including the Main Street plaque and a scholarship set up in his honor through the Edwardsville Community Foundation. The Marvin “Preach” Webb Scholarship provides assistance to an Edwardsville Community Unit School District student with special needs. More information on the scholarship can be found here:
