Edwardsville’s R.P. Lumber Center is now part of SilverSneakers, a fitness and wellness program offered at no cost to seniors 65 and older on eligible Medicare plans.
That means that eligible senior citizens who are enrolled in SilverSneakers can take advantage of everything offered at the R.P. Lumber Center -- including the walking track, fitness center, ice rink and classes – at no cost to them.
The R.P. Lumber Center opened in June at 6289 Tiger Drive. The Parks & Recreation Department facility is a community recreational complex that is open year-round and features an NHL-regulation-size ice rink, an indoor track and fitness center, a teen center, concessions area and community rooms.
Its location adjacent to Edwardsville High School makes it a convenient facility for students and their families, but the facility offers plenty for all ages, said Phil Zamora, the Center’s superintendent. And the addition of SilverSneakers provides an extra incentive for senior citizens to visit – particularly when inclement weather makes it impossible to be active outside.
“The track, with how wide it is, and the quality of the track, it’s easy on the knees for senior citizens,” Zamora said. “I think that’s going to be a big draw for the walkers.”
He said the facility’s fitness center offers an added benefit for senior citizens. Additional fitness classes intended for older visitors also are a possibility in the near future.
