Fishing Derby

The annual fishing derby is held every spring in an Edwardsville park. This free catch-and-release event is open to kids up to 15 years old. Whether you are a beginner or been fishing for years, it's a fun time!

TIME: 8:30 to 11 a.m.
LOCATION: Joe Glik Park, 710 E Lake Dr
COST: Free (no pre-registration required) 
WHAT TO BRING: Fishing pole and bait

Derby Rules & Details: 

  • Participants will have an hour to catch (and then release) as many fish as they can.
  • This fishing derby operates on the honor system. Participants will be in charge of tracking how many fish they catch, and measuring the size of the fish. 
  • Trophies to be awarded: 1st-3rd place for most fish caught; 1st-3rd for largest fish caught; 1st-3rd for smallest fish caught
  • At the end of the event all participants will receive a free cherry limeade from Sonic!

10:30: Derby concludes
10:45: Winners are announced

Fishing Lessons

Illinois Department of Natural Resources host lessons at Leclaire Park each summer as a part of the Southern Illinois Urban Fishing Program. These clinics are meant for everyone including kids, parents, seniors, and anyone else interested. Whether you are a beginner or wanting to learn more, everyone is welcome!

TIME: Two clinics are offered each day; choose from 9-11 a.m. or 1-3:30 p.m.
LOCATION: Leclaire Park, 900 Hale Avenue
COST: Free (no pre-registration required, however if you have a big group please let us know, that way we know to bring more bait and equipment. You can contact the parks department by calling (618) 692-7538 or email our special events coordinator, gpellock@cityofedwardsville.com.)
WHAT TO BRING: All bait and fishing equipment provided. However, if you prefer you can bring your own!
